IS SPECIFIC SUP WEAR REALLY NECESSARY?
Of course, you can always paddleboard in sports leggings/pants and a technical, breathable T-shirt. However, since SUP takes place on the water, it’s better to wear clothing that dries quickly in case of a fall. Avoid heavy cotton clothes, which absorb water and become extra heavy.
SUP wear with UV protection is also recommended, as it provides better sun and cold protection than standard sportswear.
ESSENTIAL SUP WEAR FOR SUMMER MONTHS
During summer, essential SUP wear includes UV protection shirts (50+), quick-drying shorts, and UV-protected leggings.
However, SUP wear should not be chosen based only on air temperature but also on water temperature. If paddling on cold rivers like Ribnica or Soča, consider a thin, flexible 1.5mm neoprene top. While you might not want to wear it in 25+°C temperatures, you can always pack it in a dry bag and use it if needed.
UV Protection Shirts
UV protection shirts are useful for all outdoor sports, whether on water or land. They block at least 98% UVB and 95% UVA rays, offering maximum protection from sunburn and premature skin aging.
They are essential for water sports enthusiasts such as swimmers, kiteboarders, windsurfers, surfers, and paddlers. They are also excellent for traveling to tropical destinations with intense sun exposure.
UV Protection Shirts for Hiking
UV protection shirts are also gaining popularity in hiking. The Red Original UV Shirt is a fantastic hiking option, as its Dri-release fabric ensures breathability while providing UV 50+ protection.
UV Protection Shirts for Kids
For quick and effective sun protection at the beach, UV protection shirts are the best option for kids. Unlike sunscreen, which wears off in water, a UV shirt provides long-lasting protection.
UV Protection Leggings
UV protection leggings are an essential and versatile piece of SUP wear. They are highly valued by kiteboarders, paddlers, swimmers, windsurfers, and water skiers, as well as by beach walkers exposed to prolonged sun exposure.
With the depletion of the ozone layer, UV leggings are now almost a must-have in tropical locations like Madagascar, Brazil, Kenya, and the Philippines, where sunscreen alone is often insufficient.
Board Shorts
During summer, comfortable and lightweight board shorts are ideal. They should be breathable, light-colored, and loose-fitting to allow air circulation. The best options can be used both in water and on land.
Board shorts are quick-drying and provide sun protection, making them a perfect SUP wear choice for any paddler.
WHAT SUP WEAR TO CHOOSE IN AUTUMN?
As temperatures drop, you can opt for neoprene clothing (full wetsuits or separate tops/pants), breathable sports sweaters, or windproof and waterproof jackets. Layering is recommended.
Changing becomes quick and comfortable with a poncho, while microfiber towels are great for compact packing in a dry bag when heading to a remote beach.
Poncho Towels for the Beach
A poncho towel is a must-have SUP accessory and is ideal for all beach lovers. It simplifies changing on the beach, ensuring privacy and convenience.
Made from warm, absorbent materials like polyester and cotton, it dries you quickly and keeps you warm after water activities.
WHAT SUP WEAR TO CHOOSE IN WINTER?
In winter, both air and water temperatures drop significantly, requiring thicker wetsuits (5/4mm), booties, gloves, or even drysuits.
Dry Suits
A dry suit is an excellent choice for those who want to paddleboard in winter but dislike extreme cold. The fabric prevents water entry, keeping you warm and dry even in freezing conditions.
Winter Jacket for Water Sports
A high-quality winter jacket is crucial for protection against rain and wind. The best options allow easy changing from wet neoprene to dry clothes.
An insulated jacket is also beneficial post-session, ensuring your body temperature doesn’t drop too quickly. These jackets are also great for sailing and cycling, providing wind resistance while remaining lightweight.
COMFORTABLE SUP WEAR IS KEY!
Ensure that all SUP wear, gear, and accessories are comfortable, lightweight, and quick-drying. Before heading out, check whether they offer adequate sun protection.
SUP wear is designed specifically for paddlers' needs. If you paddleboard frequently, investing in high-quality SUP wear will provide greater durability and comfort over time.
